New Sounds of China - Episode 4

This is the fourth edition of New Sounds of China, and this week we are looking at Beijing electronic music.
Featuring a wide range of bands (as we are really covering a mammoth topic this week), including Sulumi, Dead J, Me:Mo, Wang Lei, FM3, Supermarket and Feng Jiangzhou, and interviews with Dead J and FM3, we ask questions such as “who was the first electronic band in Beijing?” and “is it really important?”

As if such philosophical ponderings weren’t enough, we give you a listen-in on some of the sounds of the Buddha Machine, a device that is at once inherently desirable and useless, as well as a sneak preview from Dead J’s forthcoming album in September – possibly the first airplay in the world. (at least as far as we know)

This is the first episode of New Sounds Of China (NSOC) with Paul Kendall and Wang Weilin broadcast on 7th May 2008.

Broadcasting in a mish-mash of the world’s three most popular languages – English, Chinese and Music – NSOC hopes to challenge orientalist perceptions of Chinese music, and prove that there’s more playing on the iPods of the People’s Republicans than just Peking Opera.

The show will include music by Meihao Yaodian, Li Jianhong among others, and an exclusive interview with Li Tieqiao. Tune in and prepare for … er, something!

The second in this series of live shows on Chinese contemporary music, today’s show is bringing you music from Snapline, Joyside, PK14, Car Sick Cars Nezha, and SMZB.

Presenter Wang Weilin went on tour with Car Sick Cars and will have plenty to tell you about it, and there will be the usual informed commentary from Paul Kendall. This week also features interviews with Car Sick Cars. Bilingual with English and Chinese (Mandarin).

A weekly show presenting Chinese contemporary music in its many surprising guises. Broadcasting in a mish-mash of the world’s three most popular languages – English, Chinese and Music – New Sounds of China hopes to challenge orientalist perceptions of Chinese music, and prove that there’s more playing on the iPods of the People’s Republicans than just Peking Opera. Presented by Wang Weilin and Paul Kendall, as a joint collaboration between Resonance FM and London Chinese Radio.

Today’s episode of New Sounds of China is a special “Earthquake Edition” which is dedicated to the largely overlooked but nevertheless substantial fundraising effort by Chinese rock bands, organising concerts in Beijing Shanghai, Guangzhou, and other major cities around the country, bringing in major names on the China rock scene.

Presented by Paul Kendall and Wang Weilin, the programme features interviews with Niu Lei from Indiechina.com, Zhang Chu from Tree Music, He Yong, Kiki (from Milk@Coffee), Ding Taisheng, and three different benefit concert organisers, as well as music from Wan Xiaoli, Su Yang, Milk@Coffee, Cui Jian, Confucius Says, and Zhang Chu.

You Are Hear 5th Birthday Show - 5 years of live music sessions

You Are Hear is an alternative/experimental music and arts show based in London and the South East. This special aired in May 2007 looks back at five years of live sessions recorded on the You Are Hear show between 2002 and 2006, when it was broadcast weekly on Resonance FM.

All music on this show was recorded live on the show. The hour long show features archive recordings of Juana Molina, Germlin, Noxagt, Momus, The Man From Uranus, Miss Hawaii and Pram all from the shows You Are Hear Sessions 2002-6 CD on DIY label Hearing Aid Records. Plus hear two brand new sessions from Xylitol and Boudof Songs.

The show is produced by Magz Hall and Jim Backhouse founders of South London Radio Arts (www.londonradioarts.org.uk) and since 2006 it can be heard regularly on www.totallyradio.com and via its dedicated podcast at www.youarehear.co.uk

Bob Moog interview from the YAH archive – This interview was recorded at the Sonar Festival back in June 2004 : Magz Hall talked to Bob Moog, the pioneering inventor of the Moog synthesizer.

“Bob Moog is certainly one of the most inspiring men I have ever met and had the pleasure to interview, he was a fascinating and lovely man and listening back brings tears to my eyes that he is no longer around but his legacy like his synths live on.”
